Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the Pediatric Patient

Abstract
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has rapidly and radically changed the surgical treatment of gallstone in Korea First performed by French surgeons Mouret, Dubois, and perissat in France in 1987 and 1988, laparoscopic cholecystectomy was soon
thereafter
introduced into the Korea and has been performed with ever increasing frequency and become a popular alternative to open cholecystectomy in adults patients. In recent years, cholelithiasis and the occurrence of gallbladder disease has been
recognized in
increasing numbers of pediatric patients. The traditional surgical approach to the management of symptomatic cholelithiasis in children has been open cholecystectomy as for adults. Yet pediatric surgeons may wish to propose laparoscopic
cholecystectomy
to therir patients. Because almost all the courses and preceptor training are aimed at treating the adult patient, pediatric surgeons will need to adapt the principled and techniques from experiences in adults to the young population in order to
perform
the operation safely and efficaciously. Published series of laparoscopic cholecystectomies report decreased length of hospital day, diminished costs, and lower morbidity for patients undergoing this procedure. The following reports describe
laparoscopic
cholecystectomy in my hospital.
